Yesterday afternoon we experienced the first real lockdown of my teaching career. It happened just as the primary kids were about to leave school, so they were forced to stay cooped up on campus until the lockdown was lifted. Apparently, someone in the neighborhood had a PVC pipe potato gun that was considered "extremely dangerous" so the police called a lockdown for my elementary school. Not too big of a deal, unless you have to deal with 30 restless 5th graders for 20 minutes. Inevitably, as soon as the announcement was made to lock all doors, almost every kid in my class had to use the restroom. Ugh. According to procedure you are supposed to sit silently on the floor until everything is deemed safe. It was more of a nuisance than a scare, at least for me. Hopefully that never happens again.
(Not my picture, but this is pretty much what my drive to work looks like these days)
Then, today, we had a fog delay, which of course is a delight as school started 2 hours later. It does cause my class to go a bit crazy, but at least I have to deal with them for only 5 hours instead of 7. But of course, just my luck, I got a new student today (she's a delight, but adjusting a student to a new school on a foggy day schedule is a bit difficult).
Lockdown + Fog Delay + New Student = Severely disrupted classroom (and one tired teacher)
Hopefully everything will return back to normal tomorrow.
