Soothing a crying baby...

Um no, we certainly aren't very good at soothing Henry at this point in our parenting careers, but we're sure learning a lot. We are trying lots of things, some work, others not so much. Today we discovered that Henry calms down (for awhile at least) when John holds him on his side (Thanks Happiest Baby on the Block). Photo evidence below:

He layed there frozen like this for at least a few minutes...he had his mouth puckered like that and everything.

Then he decided to stretch...he loves to stretch

After the stretching he went straight to his old stand-by position...the muscle man

Then he kind of got over the whole side hold position...but at least it worked for awhile.
What crazy things did you do to soothe your baby?

I found putting the babies in a dark closet for a few hours worked, if not, try mixing their formula with some tequila.

When I babysit (they're usually a bit older) I hold them facing out so they see more going on. I rock in a chair kind of reclining or sway so they feel the movement and they cant fixate on a lot because theyre moving. Theyre also close enough to feel secure, warm, and hear my heart beat which is supposed to be comforting?

When Emily was little and totally fussy Scott and read about the "fourth trimester syndrome." Basically the idea is that anything you can do to "re-create" the sounds of the womb will calm the baby.

The vacuum was Emily's favorite, and calmed her almost instantly. And our carpet was never cleaner! :)

LOVE the Happiest Baby on the Block! Swaddling was great for our kids! And don't let anyone tell you that Henry doesn't like it because he tries to get his arms out. That's what all babies do, but not because they resist swaddling. As for our own ideas, how about driving around Anaheim at midnight so our 2 1/2 year old will sleep before Disneyland?

Wes liked it when we would swing him in his car seat..it usually put him to sleep..so that was always a plus..but it worked like a charm..

I've always sung to my babies, or had soft music on while rocking. I LOVED the swing I had that played music at the same time...Isaac LOVED that swing!

I second the Happiest Baby on the Block techniques! I've used those (swaddling esp) on so many infants and they've worked every time. (That even includes the 10 day old pos-tox baby we had who still shook from the effects of the drugs that had been in his little system.) Many people tell me their kids don't like swaddling, but you can't agrue with results! (Now of course there's an age limit on that--my 8 mo old would definitely throw a fit if I tried it now.)

I also think Secrets of the Baby Whisperer (by Tracy Hogg) has a lot of great advice... especially on sleeping!

**For those who read this who don't know me, I do emergency foster care for infants.
