Under the weather...

The boys have been sick this past week.  Seems they somehow got hand-foot-mouth disease, which is basically just a rash that concentrates in the hands, feet, and mouth (duh.)  Unfortunately, in true Charlie skin fashion, his skin erupted in little red sores all over, especially in his diaper area.  They sores were blister like, very red, and pretty ugly looking.  After emailing pictures of his skin to our doctor HFMD was confirmed.  She said Charlie just had a bad case due to his eczema.  Henry got the fever and general malaise and has since broken out in the rash on his legs and feet, and also has sores on his hands, a few in his mouth, and another couple on his face.  Generally speaking the rash isn't especially itchy, which is good.

The worst part of all of this is that the boys are sleeping terribly.  Henry has been waking up screaming and crying and sweating profusely and Charlie, oh my, just plain wants to be awake in the middle of the night.  Last night I was up with him for 3 hours, during which time I drove him to the airport and back (he didn't fall asleep) and then to our neighboring town and back which finally put him to sleep, although as soon as we tried to transfer him, he woke up and was awake for another hour.  John's even spent some good time walking him around the neighborhood in the stroller at 3am.  Hopefully we'll get this all behind us soon.

I always know Henry's sick when he falls asleep on the couch on his own (while watching netflix no less ;)...

And Charlie actually seems to be a pretty happy camper...

even though his skin looks like this...

See, happy boy!...

And this little smile makes those 3 hour middle of the night sessions a wee bit more bearable (but only a wee bit ;)

My kids both got that about a year ago... and I got it, too! It sure increased my compassion for them! The hardest part was that none of us wanted to eat because it hurt so much, which of course the lack of nutrition then made for crabby attitudes! We drank lots of protein shakes & stuck to soft foods. Hope they're both feeling better soon!
