Onto the scene bursts the Mennonite Your Way (MYW) idea. I'm not really sure where it came from, but either way the seed was planted. For those of you non-Mennonites out there, or for those of you Mennonite non-MYWers, here's a brief synopsis: MYW is a hospitality network for both Mennonites and non-Mennonites alike. Those who feel compelled to offer their home in the spirit of Christian hospitality (for a small donation) can register as hosts. Right now there are hosts in over 50 countries around the world, totally over 16oo individual residences. The directors of the program compile the host listings into a directory, which can be purchased for a modest fee of $30 (including s&h). Those who are interested in becoming a MYW guest must simply order the directory and then find a host who is within reasonable traveling distance to their desired location.
Hosts are asked to provide bedspace, bedding, and towels. Guests are asked to pay $10/night/adult (and $2/night/child), and if any meals are provided by the host the donation requested is $2/meal/person. Very economical (and very Wiebe).
John and I ordered a directory post-haste. When it arrived we found residences near Boston and New York City that would meet our needs and promptly called our potential hosts. Both agreed to indulge us with their hospitality, and indulged we were. Below are brief summaries of our first Mennonite Your Way experiences.
