Our traditional Frantz/Penner New Year's celebration was a bit different this year. Since most of the Penner family traveled east to Iowa for Nathan & Adrianne's wedding celebration and the Frantz family had just returned from an exotic southern locale...it was up to the younger generation to carry this tradition into the New Year. Jill, Jay, John, Henry, and I thought it would just be the 5 of us, but luckily, Toni, Peter, and David were able to join us as well. A Frantz/Penner celebration happened after all! The tradition just couldn't die :)
Traditionally, Melissa & Susanne make fritters & doughnuts on New Year's Day, but Jill, Toni, and I were willing to let that tradition die, this year. Our spouses, however, wouldn't stand for this, so we decided to try our hand at fritters. Only this year, we did not make raisin fritters (none of us are huge raisin lovers) so we decided to make apple fritters with orange zest instead. I had tried apple fritters for the first time the night before at Shelly's and fell in love with them, so we have Shelly to thank for our efforts.

We are so thankful for the many wonderful traditions of which we are a part, as well as the long-running friendship between the Penner & Frantz families.

I am glad we were able to keep New Years celebration alive! Despite smelling like hot oil for the rest of the day, the fritters were amazing and totally worth it :)

I just happened to randomly stumble across your blog to find this! My family also makes the fritters, but we call them New Year's cookies (this is more likely just a family name for them). It's funny because our last name is Penner as well. My grandparents are devout Mennonites so this is very interesting to find. They also have a German background.
